Green Tea could kill oral cancer

A chief compound ascertained in green tea may elicit a process that slays down oral cancer cells while parting healthy cells alone, discovers a recent promising research.

Earlier researches had revealed that ‘epigallocatechin-3-gallate’ (EGCG), a prime compound deemed in green tea, destroyed oral cancer cells without injuring the normal active cells, says leading food scientists at Pennsylvania State University.

But though, the researchers did not able to cognize the details for its knack to focus the cancer cells, said the chief professor of food science at Penn State`s Centre for Plant and Mushroom Foods for Health.

The current research reveals that EGCG may spark a process in the mitochondria which is the cells` powerhouse that in turn leads to cell death.

EGCG is performing something to destruct the mitochondria and that mitochondrial injury sets up a steer producing more damage and it coiled out, until the cell endures encoded cell death," say experts.

It seems like EGCG instigate the creation of reactive oxygen types in cancer cells, which hurts the mitochondria, and the mitochondria retorts by making more volatile oxygen species.

As this mitochondrial death continues, the cancer cell also lessens the expression of anti-oxidant genes, further slashing its defences. So, it is switching off its process of protection at the same time that EGCG is triggering this oxidative stress. At the same time, the EGCG did not root this reaction in normal active cells.

In fact, it seemed to augment the protective qualities of the cell, as said by the researchers. This is the recent discoveries reported and printed in the journal of ‘Molecular Nutrition and Food Research’.
