School students promote road safety
 
Chennai Traffic Police have initiated road safety awareness program for two wheeler riders. Chennai Traffic Police have involved students volunteering from various schools in spreading this social awareness.

Students are seen at all major junctions and signals with placards educating about safe driving and the importance of wearing helmets. Students also distribute pamphlets to all the commuters on two wheelers.

According to the sources, total vehicle population is close to 3 lakh out of which two wheeler population alone is 16 lakhs. With over 16 lakh two wheelers plying in the city, a very high accident rates are recorded during 2007.

The death rate in accidents occurring from two wheelers alone is 46 %. The injury or disability caused during two wheeler accidents are over 43%. In 2007 alone, about 1100 people have died from two wheeler accidents.

Chennai Traffic Police also advice the two wheeler riders to maintain the bikes well with proper tyre pressure, brakes, head lights etc, which will help avoid fatalities.

It also guides the riders to watch out for young children or old people crossing the roads.
Here are a few of the Do’s and Don’ts issued by Traffic Police :
Do:
• Use indicators wherever necessary
• Look out for people unexpectedly jumping out of public transport
• Watch out for pot holes on the road
• Wherever there is no signal, stop, look and proceed
• Watch for speed breakers
• Use the rear mirrors while changing lanes or before stopping
Don't Do:
• Don’t carry more than one passenger
• Don’t carry infants
• Don’t drive without a helmet
• Don’t drive without a valid licence
• Don’t exceed prescribed speed limits
• Don’t smoke or use cell phone while driving
• Avoid squeezing under closed railway gates
• Don’t make children seated on petrol tanks while driving
• Don’t ride through in between heavy vehicles
• Don’t Drive without lights in the night
• Don’t ride with single hand
• Don’t Overtake from left side of the vehicle except when vehicle ahead is turning right.
Chennai Traffic Police have initiated various measures to reduce fatalities caused by two wheelers. End of the day, your family depends on you and awaits your safe arrival, back home.
Riding Apparel:
Loose, fancy clothing can be uncomfortable and unsafe when riding your two wheeler, choose good quality two wheeler riding apparel when during your two wheeler.
Wear a Helmet:
Two wheeler safety equipments start with a quality safety helmet. One of the most serious injuries that can happen is a head injury.Always wear ISI approved helmet. You should also have a suitable eye protection.
