As summer demand will be 17000 MW, plans afoot to increase power generation

Even just during the current period of the start of the summer season, the demand for electrical energy has shot up to 15600 MW!  It is expected that it will shoot up further and the demand will touch 17000 MW in the coming days!

The average daily demand for electricity in Tamil Nadu is 14000 MW. During the rainy season, this reduces to 12000 MW. However, the demand increases during the summer season and goes up to 15000 MW. As there was an acute shortage of the expected rainfall over the last 2 years, the impact of the heat intensity has increased considerably. Due to this, the usage of electrical appliances (fan, cooler, air-conditioners) has increased considerably thereby increasing the demand for more electricity. As on 27th April 2018, the demand shot up to 15440 MW. This was the maximum demand for the year.

In this situation, presently, the demand for electricity has increased to 15600 MW. This was recorded on 28th February.

It is worth noting that the summer season peak has yet to start and it is just the onset of the summer season – and yet, the demand has increased by so much! During the hotter months of April and May, it is expected that the summer will be most scorching leading to higher demand for electricity which may touch 17000 MW! TANGEDCO has already initiated activities to increase the generation to meet this additional demand.

TANGEDCO officials informed that they are prepared to procure electricity from the private agency if necessary.
