Oil spills at Kamarajar Port

Posted on: 19/Nov/2018 4:12:21 PM
There was an early morning disaster that took place on Sunday morning where about 2 tonnes of furnace oil got spilled into sea. It was from an oil tanker close to Kamarajar Port, Ennore.

Sources claim the reason to be snapping of a flexible host of the MT Coral Stars at the berth-end of the vessel while it was discharging oil at Marine liquid Terminal 1 at around 4 am.

Official sources from the port says that they had initiated an emergency protocol to resolve this issue. About 2 tonnes of spill is observed.

The chairman in charge at the Kamarajar port, P Raveendran says surrounding the vessel, a fence boom was deployed so as to stop furtherance of spillage to adjacent areas. The coast guards had performed an aerial survey and there was sea side reconnaissance for evaluating the spillage.

The spillage is restricted to the ports break waters. The spills are seen only within the fenced area, say port managers after assessing the condition.

Works to recover the same are being done using skimmers and absorbent pads. By Monday the works are likely to get completed, says Raveendran.

Speaking about this, Shyam Barik, the Mercantile Marine Department principal officer says the port state inspector has just started his enquiry. Soon, a detailed report shall be filed, he adds.
