Whether the person is young or old, Covid-19 infection hasn’t spared anyone now!!
It has been revealed by data that those with diabetes as a co-morbid condition have been affected severely by the deadly and rapidly spreading Coronavirus infection.
Chennai based Dr. V. Mohan of Mohan Diabetes Specialities Centre had expressed his thoughts regarding this. He spoke about how the immunity for those with diabetes or uncontrolled sugar levels was low when compared to the others. This has been responsible for them to catch this Coronavirus infection easily. It is important to mention here that diabetes could act as a catalyst for Covid-19 infection and it would worsen the health of the patients.
This viral infection could become severe for those with other issues like BP, heart diseases, kidney ailments etc and the patients might need hospitalisation and ICU treatment. Dr. Mohan then explained how it was essential to keep an eye on the blood sugar levels regularly to keep diabetes in control. Instruments like glucometer and glucose monitoring patches could be used to check the blood sugar levels of a person. To make sure that other important organs are functioning properly, it is important to keep check on kidney and liver profiles plus cardiac and eye checkups etc. Balanced diet plays a huge role in keeping diabetes under control and patients must consume those without fail.
It is shocking to note that many persons without diabetes have been affected by Covid-19 infection and rise in the blood sugar levels have been found in them. It is learnt that the Covid-19 infection affects the pancreas and damages the beta cells causing diabetes. Dr. Mohan concluded that those with uncontrolled blood sugar levels have high risk of getting Coronavirus infection and they must take a vaccine so that the risk gets reduced and recovery becomes faster.
