The genomic sequencing done in October month has brought to light that XBB variant of Omicron has been responsible for the majority of the Covid-19 cases now across Tamil Nadu. Shocking right!!

Point is that more than 52.5percent of samples tested showed the presence of the XBB variant. This has caught the attention of many now. Twenty to twenty three percent of Covid cases noew are due to BA.5 and BA2.75.

As per Dr. P. Sampath Kumar,JD, DPH, the severity levels of XBB, BA.5 and BA2.75 in the state have not shown any significant change. He explained that unvaccinated people with comorbid conditions have been getting hospitalized.

By drawing samples from the international passengers, healthcare facilities and local clusters in TN, the state health dept conducts genomic sequencing at the state public health lab. It was mentioned by some officials belonging to DPH that the XBB variant was not so dangerous as the symptoms were similar to influenza in most cases.  In many patients, fever and cough were nor reported. In TN, the mortality due to Covid-19 infection has come down considerably in the last few months.

Dr. S. Ramesh , nodal officer belonging to Omandurar Govt Multispeciality Hospital in Chennai spoke about how persons with body ache, pneumonia and headache etc and those in the high risk category must be careful. He added that irrespective of the variant, those persons with high BP, diabetes, lung issues and those persons who have not yet got vaccinated etc would be at risk.

Most Covid cases now  are being managed at the homes themselves and due to this there are only less number of Covid affected patients getting admitted in the hospitals for treatment. He concluded that those persons who have not yet got vaccinated must get their vaccine shots because the risk of infection becoming severe would be high in them.
