Following heavy rains, the water discharge from Poondi reservoir has been increased to 12,000 cubic feet per second (cusecs) on Friday, December 13, 2024. This marks a significant rise from Thursday’s release of 5,000 cusecs. The move comes after the reservoir`s water level reached 34.47 feet, just short of its maximum capacity of 35 feet.
On Thursday evening, the water release was initially raised from 1,000 cusecs to 5,000 cusecs, alongside the issuance of a first flood warning for residents of villages along the Kosasthalaiyar River. The release of surplus water into the river has heightened the risk of flooding in these areas.
Meanwhile, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has reported that the well-marked low-pressure system over the Gulf of Mannar has shifted to the Gulf of Mannar and adjoining Comorin area. The system, accompanied by upper air cyclonic circulation, is expected to move westward toward the Maldives and Lakshadweep regions. It is likely to weaken gradually over the next 24 hours.
The heavy rains triggered by this weather system have already caused widespread inundation across Tamil Nadu, disrupting daily life in many areas. Authorities are closely monitoring the situation and have urged residents in low-lying regions to remain vigilant and follow safety measures.
