Every day, the number of Coronavirus positive infection cases among the employees belonging to Greater Chennai Corporation or GCC has been increasing. It is known that the active cases in Chennai have been nearing 50,000 now.
It is now revealed that the GCC has set up an exclusive Covid care centre for its employees and their family members. This new centre is operating from Madras University (MU) PG hostel building. This was brought to light by an official belonging to the Chennai Corporation. Already a Covid care centre for the general public has been functioning in this same building and now one portion has been allotted to the employees belonging to GCC and their families.
It is learnt that this Covid care centre could be used by the employees of GCC plus by the employees of CMWSSB. The facility could be used by permanent employees only and this was according to an order from the civic body. Fact is that temporary staff as well as contract employees would not be able to use this facility at MU PG hostel building.
Various contract staff or temporary staff includes the majority of conservancy workers, FOCUS volunteers plus others like fever survey workers and doctors running fever clinics etc.
According to the order it was clear that the permanent employees and their family members could get tested at a scanning centre at the PG hostel. Based on their test result and seriousness of the symptoms, they could get admitted in the Covid care centre in the building.
It was later pointed out by a source from GCC that daily more than 100 employees (those working on contract or temporary basis) have been testing positive for Covid-19 infection. A senior officer belonging to GCC mentioned that just 1 or 2 cases have been reported among the permanent employees per day.
