Till now, the lack of beds to treat Coronavirus patients in various hospitals in Chennai has been making news.
Now, for a change, for the first time ever since the second Covid-19 wave started, Chennai hospitals have been witnessing decrease in the number of patients with less occupancy of beds in the last 2 days.
This has now come as a huge relief for the hospitals in Chennai as they have been finding it tough to provide beds for Covid-19 patients. According to the Tamil Nadu state media bulletin, Chennai had just 180 vacant ICU and oxygen supported beds on 11th May 2021.
It is important to mention here that yesterday there were as many as 1496 vacant ICU and oxygen supported beds. Earlier this week, the number of patients occupying the oxygen supported beds increased and reached 8666 are known. On Thursday, it got reduced by 400. It must be noted that as a consequence of this and with increase in capacity the number of vacant oxygen supported beds increased from 800 to 1417 yesterday.
From around 14000, the number of patients in hospitals including those in non-oxygen supported beds came down 13307 yesterday. There were many from the neighbouring districts and they came to Chennai for admissions in the hospitals. It is very clear that the decline in the bed occupancy now is due to decline in the cases with more number of recoveries.
Information is that the oxygen supported beds capacity continued to increase amidst the sustained efforts made by the administration. In the first week of May month, there were roughly 7500 ICU and oxygen supported beds available and the beds capacity went up by more than 60% to 12136 beds yesterday. The superb piece of information is that the Chennai city has started to come out of this second Coronavirus infection wave as there is decrease in the fresh cases and TPR now.
Last Sunday, in Chennai, there were as many as 5169 fresh cases and yesterday there were just 2779 fresh cases. About 30,000 tests are being conducted in a day in the city of Chennai
