By controlling the spread of second COVID infection wave, Chennai has set an example for others

The number of fresh Coronavirus cases has been declining now. The second Coronavirus infection wave that was spreading rapidly like fire in the city of Chennai just a few weeks back has been brought under control now. By this, Chennai has now set an example for the state and India in controlling the infection spread.
It must be remembered that even in the first infection wave Chennai was head and shoulders over others in controlling the infection spread and it grabbed many eyeballs.
It was not easy to control the spread now but GCC took superb steps to control the spread of this deadly infection. Point to be noted is that the experience gained in the first wave along with an effective pandemic prevention plan contributed to the infection control.
Chennai hospitals faced shortage of beds at one point of time due to huge rise in the number of daily cases. Now, these hospitals have been breathing easy with the reduction in the number of cases. Now, the number of beds available in the hospitals has also increased.
In addition to the intense lock down in Chennai, the other factor that played a huge role in bringing the infection under control was the implementation of revised micro plan from 19th May for Covid-19 management by the public health department.
It is brought to light that GCC experiences from 2020, surveillance, contact tracings etc along with integrated pandemic management of conducting fever camps in hotspots, vaccination camps and conversion of care centres to health centres have worked well in Chennai.
The pandemic was brought under control early because of rolling out a modified plane that was used in the first wave. This was according to Mr. Gagandeep Singh Bedi, Chennai corporation commissioner. He hinted that if the pandemic was not controlled early then it would have gone totally beyond control in Chennai.
