Few days back, Chennai city had around 7500 daily Covid-19 positive cases and now it has come down to around 6000. This has caught the attention of many now. Various important strategies that GCC had adopted over a period of time have been tremendous and successful now in Chennai city.
According to Mr. Gagandeep Singh Bedi, Chennai corporation commissioner, there are now around 12000 fever survey workers who have been visiting 100 to 150 houses everyday to identify those with Covid-19 symptoms. These fever survey workers have been able to identify around 5000 influenza like illness patients every day and samples are sent for testing. He threw light about how GCC has been proactively identifying the Covid-19 patients now before the situation worsens.
Various other strategies that have helped in reducing the number of daily Coronavirus cases in Chennai are work by the FOCUS volunteers, car ambulances, improved vaccination coverage, directives to private labs to send results directly to the civic body plus tele-counselling centres etc.
It is said that these reduced the panic as the people have been informed of their health status by the staff. Mr. Gagandeep Singh spoke about how the private labs in Chennai have been asked not to send the test reports directly to the patients without the knowledge of the GCC.
By this, unnecessary occupancy of the oxygen beds has been prevented. Information is that the zonal teams with doctors visit the houses to check on those patients who are below the age of 60. Home isolation or hospitalization has been advised to them. It must be noted that those patients who are above the age of 60 are taken to various screening centres on car ambulances. The further spreading of Covid-19 infection gets avoided by visiting the Covid-19 patients for triaging. Point is that this strategy has been adopted in various countries now.
To contact those under home quarantine and to track their health status, GCC has appointed 300 final year medicos plus around 1500 volunteers at the tele-counselling centres. Point is that yesterday more than 32000 calls were made to the patients in Chennai.
