It has been confirmed by data belonging to Chennai Corporation that out of a total of 31252 samples tested on Thursday just 6073 turned positive or 19.4% test positivity rate or TPR.
It was on 30th April that Chennai recorded TPR below 20% and till Thursday TPR remained above 20% only in Chennai. There were as many as 5913 Covid-19 positive cases on Friday, 21st May 2021.
On 10th of May, TPR in Chennai touched a peak of 26.6% samples tested turned to be positive. And until 17th May TPR saw steady decline in Chennai. Truth is that TPR went to 23.2% on that day and a day before on 16th may TPR was 21.2%. Information is that from 19th April to 9th May 2021, TPR in Chennai remained stable at nearly 20%.
According to an officer belonging to GCC it was clear that lockdown was one of the factors that led to decline in the TPR in Chennai. He added that vaccination plus other factors like stricter implementation of home isolation of infected persons and others have also played huge roles in TPR reduction now. On 1st of April, the Coronavirus infection spread just started to get worse and TPR on that day was 7.3& in Chennai city.
It must be remembered that in the months of December 2020 and January 2021(fag end of the first Covid-19 infection wave) TPR is Chennai was below 5%. It is learnt that GCC wants to keep TPR around 20% for now and then bring TPR back to below 5% later.
