Continuous supply- In this very strict upcoming lockdown, vehicles to sell veggies and fruits to public in Chennai and in TN

Uninterrupted supply of vegetables and fruits would be there for the public even in this upcoming total lock down!!

From 6am in the morning till noon across the state, vegetables and fruits would be sold through vehicles in the intense week-long total lock down in Tamil Nadu. This was decided by the TN government.

In Chennai, as many as2600 minivans and tricycles would supply about 1160 tonnes of vegetables and fruits and in the rest of TN 2770 vehicles would be used to sell 2228tonnes of veggies and fruits to the public. According to a statement from the Tamil Nadu government, everyday nearly 3400 tonnes of vegetables and fruits would be purchased from the farmers.

To know about the supply of vegetables and fruits in their localities, the public could contact the helpline number 044 22253884. This number has been set up by the TN state agriculture department.

In the wake of total lockdown from Monday, the decision to supply vegetables and fruits in vehicles was taken in the meeting that took place between agricultural and farmers welfare minister Mr. R.K. Paneerselvam and senior agriculture department officers yesterday. It is learnt that the TN government had planned to source the vegetables from local farmers and it would be sold to the public in those respective areas. The total requirement is 18000 tonnes and the quantity planned by the government is just 1/6th of the total requirement. It is now said that the government would take steps to increase the supply in the coming days. Information is that Chennai alone requires 1500 tonnes every day.

For the seamless working of the system, a separate team of officials from the horticulture, agriculture and agri-marketing departments were formed. For supplying veggies through local bodies, local administration officers as well as cooperative department officers have also been roped in.
