Many of us are of the view that the second Covid-19 infection wave in Chennai has hit the younger generation the most. The shocking truth is that in this second infection wave in Chennai around 70% of 7222 victims were above the age of 60 even as many young people got affected by the infection. This has been revealed now by the health department. What is even more shocking was the fact that the mortality among men was twice high than that of women in this second Covid-19 infection wave
It has been confirmed by the data that more deaths 27.11% took place among those between 60 to 69 and 26.05% victims were between the age group 70 to 79. It is learnt 17.51% of the victims of the second wave belonged to the age group 50 to 59 and 16.47% victims were above the age of 80. Point to be taken into consideration is that 87.14% victims were above the age of 50.
The deaths among the younger generations were lesser when compared to others inspite of the rate of infection being high in the younger age groups. In the age group 30 to 39 just 3.27% deaths were reported in Chennai. It must be noted that in Chennai with regard to the number of infections atleast 20.90% of the city`s tally were from 30 to 39 years of age. Among those in the age group 20 to 29, less than 1% deaths were reported in Chennai.
The data from the health department showed that 67% of deaths were males and 33% were women and among the total who were infected 51.87% were males and 48.13% were women. It is important to mention here that on 1st April 2021 Chennai city witnessed as many as 4249 deaths in a day. As many as2973 deaths out of a total of 7222 deaths in Chennai due to Covid19 infection were reported in just 2months from 1st of April.
According to an official belonging to the Chennai Corporation, in the first wave most victims were elders who had com-morbid conditions and the number of deaths would come down in the future.
