Has sports season fervour piqued your interest in a career in sports? Maharashtra is your best bet

According to data from Indeed, the world’s no. 1 job site, the maximum number of jobs in sports are available in the state of Maharashtra, which contributes 23% of all sports jobs in India. It is followed by Karnataka, Telangana, New Delhi, and Tamil Nadu, which contribute 16%, 12%, 11% and 7% respectively, making up the leading five states in India for a career in sports. These jobs do not reflect sports profiles as pursued by athletes and professional sportspeople, but rather job roles that serve to support and supplement the key players on ground.
In recent years, roles such as sports physiotherapist, sports manager, sports photographer, sports analyst, sports commentators and sports journalist have come into the limelight, courtesy of high profile cricket events. Dedicated sports enthusiasts often seek to channel their passion into their work, and seek career opportunities to explore their interests. Such openings offer job seekers a chance to combine work with pleasure, and help them build a dream career for themselves.

Indeed data also highlights a high level of interest in the field among the age group of 61-65 year olds and 41-45 year olds; an interesting observation against the expected high levels of interest from the age group of those below 20 years of age. It appears that job seekers are turning to their passions in their golden years, seeking the role of coach or mentor to fresh young talent. However, the age group of 21-30 shows relatively low levels of interest in jobs in sports. This could possibly be an indicator of altering lifestyles that leave no room for holistic pursuits.

While the various state governments and the central government are doing their bit towards supporting and boosting sports development, the onus for this also lies with Corporate India – a powerful force that can lead this transformation through their contribution. In the past few years, corporate associations have seen tremendous success, be it the kabbadi or football. The success of such initiatives should be encouragement enough for more companies to come forward and help in the development of the various sports that India is home to.”
With the Sports Ministry’s Khelo India Program seeking to foster an environment of sporting enthusiasm, and institutionalize the outdoor habit, it is clear that India is well on its way to becoming a sporting superpower. With initiatives such as the inclusion of mandatory sports in school curriculums, to revive the healthy lifestyle habits of the yesteryears, and give the much needed impetus to physical education. Various state governments have also offered incentives in the form of employment opportunities to those with sporting credentials. With a structured approach to design and implementation, a sustainable ecosystem for the practice and betterment of sports could be created and maintained for the long term.
