Tamil Nadu is set to experience widespread rainfall over the next three days as a Well Marked Low (WML) pressure area moves through North Sri Lanka, Palk Bay/Gulf of Mannar, South Tamil Nadu, and Kerala. According to weather experts, this system`s trajectory is likely to bring heavy rainfall to several districts across the state.
Key Weather Updates:
Delta Region:
The Delta districts, including Nagapattinam, Tiruvarur, Mayiladuthurai, Cuddalore, Thanjavur, Trichy, Perambalur, Ariyalur, and Pudukottai, are expected to bear the brunt of the rains today and tomorrow. These regions are perfectly positioned to receive very heavy rainfall due to mass convergence caused by the low-pressure system moving over the Palk Strait.
Chennai and Surrounding Areas (KTCC):
Chennai will see rain activity picking up later in the day, with heavier rains expected by evening and night. Though the low-pressure area is far from Chennai, the northern part of the system is expected to bring significant rainfall. Nearby regions like Pondicherry, Villupuram, Tiruvannamalai, and Kallakurichi will also experience heavy rainfall.
Interior Tamil Nadu and Western Tamil Nadu:
Interior regions such as Coimbatore, Nilgiris, Salem, Erode, Namakkal, Karur, and Dindigul are likely to experience heavy to very heavy rains due to the system`s movement. Notably, Kodaikanal and Coonoor, known for their open valleys, may witness extreme rainfall, making these areas unsafe for travel.
North Interior Tamil Nadu:
Districts like Vellore, Ranipet, Tirupattur, and Krishnagiri will receive good rains, albeit for a shorter duration.
South Tamil Nadu:
Moderate to heavy rains are expected in Madurai, Theni, Tenkasi, and Virudhunagar over the next 2-3 days. However, extreme southern districts like Thoothukudi, Tirunelveli, and Kanyakumari may experience lighter rainfall depending on the exact track of the system.
Travel Advisory:
- Travelers are advised to avoid hilly areas like Kodaikanal and Coonoor, as these regions are likely to experience dangerous levels of rainfall over the next few days.
- Residents in affected districts should stay alert for weather updates and follow safety guidelines issued by local authorities.
Cyclone Update:
There are no cyclone formation chances associated with this system.
