Chennai Corporation collects Rs 581 Crores towards property tax

The Chennai Corporation has collected Rs 581 Crores towards property tax for the current year. A majority of this came from zones such as Teynampet, Adyar and Royapuram. The civic body`s property tax collection was 480.13 crore in 2013-14 and 461.10 crore in 2012-13. The past fiscal, it also collected 254 crore as professional tax.
 
Corporation officials while explaining that how was it done said, "Extensive ground work, fixing bugs on the online tax collection facility, setting up collection centers at banks and special property tax camps made it happen. We issued distress warrant notices to defaulters asking them to pay the dues. We had prepared a list of defaulters who had arrears of more than 50,000. And we mainly targeted large commercial establishments."
