How would you feel if you are told that a single travel card would be enough for you to travel in all modes of transport including autos and taxis etc in Chennai? Sound’s incredible right!!

Chennai residents have been finding it difficult to move from one mode of transport to another to reach their destinations. As a result, they use their own vehicles to reach their destinations in Chennai.  Now, to boost the use of public transportation that has been decreasing because of increased use of personal vehicles there would be just a single unified card in the future for the public.

With this National Common Mobility Card or NCMC, he or she would be able to travel seamlessly in various modes of transport in Chennai. It is mentioned that this single unified card should also cover autos and taxis for the sake of last mile connectivity.

On Thursday, transport minister Mr. S.S. Sivashankar grabbed many eyeballs when he announced the introduction of NCMC in MTC and in TNSTC Coimbatore and Madurai buses. The trial operation would begin in Chennai very soon. It must be taken into account that the commuters would be able to make use of their existing debit or credit cards to make payments across all segments like metro trains, MTC, suburban trains, tollgates, parking and retail etc.

He threw light about how the stored value on the card supports offline transactions across all travel needs with minimal financial risk for stakeholders. Information is that the NCMC supported by RuPay platform facilitates multi-nodal transit and offline payment etc.

According to Aswathy Dilip, South Asia director, Institute for Transportation and Development Policy, a common mobility card would improve our convenience for seamless travel between various modes of transportation. She added that by using a single unified card the commuter would not have the necessity to keep various cards like metro train cards for Chennai Metro etc.

The NCMC would be integrated with the shared bicycle sharing system present outside bus stops and metro stations etc and with parking management of GCC. The superb piece of information is that NCMC would be introduced soon.
