Latest regarding Chennai City habitat development committee!!

For the sake of better coordination in solving the problems prevalent at various resettlement areas in Chennai and in policy formation, a committee composed of members from various government departments was formed. On Thursday, at the Ripon Buildings in Chennai the first meeting of the Chennai City Habitat Development Committee meeting took place. The committee would make sure that the livelihoods of people in the resettlement sites are stable.
As per Chennai Corporation limits, the divisions of TNUHDB or Tamil Nadu Urban Habitat Development Board was restructured and resettlement sites older than 15 years would be renovated. Renovation of more than 25000 houses has started in the phase-1 now. In near future, work would be done to renovate around 40000 houses in resettlement sites in Chennai.
The resident welfare associations have been asked to maintain their houses and the initial amount for the scheme would be provided by the TN government. This would be under the Nam Kudiyiruppu Nam Poruppu scheme.
On 2nd March 2022, a GO was released by the Housing and Urban Development Department, the corporation commissioner would do the role of committee chairman and the police commissioner would do the role as deputy chairman. Point is that the managing director of TNUHDB would be the coordinator.
For every 2 months, the committee would take part in the meeting and discuss various things. It is noteworthy that the committee would have the elected representatives and officers of various departments like health, transport, child welfare, education and electricity as its members.
In 15 resettlement areas in Chennai with more than 1000 houses, a committee would be formed at the site level and assistant engineers belonging to Chennai Corporation would be the head of these panels. The strengthening of legal safeguards against arbitrary eviction of people was stressed in the meeting. This was as per some activists.
