In an attempt to increase the number of beneficiaries by 10 percent, the Greater Chennai Corporation or GCC would be giving a makeover to its public health infrastructure. Point is that it is running as many as 140 urban primary health centres UPHCs, 16 urban community health centres or UCHC’s, 3 emergency obstetric care centres and diagnostic centres etc. The officers have mentioned that this would in turn reduce the load on tertiary care facilities of the TN government’s health department in Chennai. Now, in a day, more than 15000 patients visit a corporation hospital in Chennai. It is noteworthy that whenever there has been an increase in the infectious diseases atleast 28000 patients visit PHC a day.

It must be noted that last Sunday 113 patients went to Mogappair based corporation hospital for cold and flu issues. Point is that once the infrastructure gets better then more of such patients would increase at the centres for treatment of minor ailments, minor surgical services, fever treatment, TB, dengue, malaria, diagnosis and management of communicable and non-communicable diseases , Caesarean and normal deliveries etc.

Many middle class residents have been visiting UPHC at Radhakrishnan Salai after theCovid-19 infection pandemic. These residents have demanded better services. This was as per a resident from T. Nagar. He threw light on how the service provided at this UPHC was good and free of cost. This has made the residents demand for more infrastructures at the centre now.

It was proposed to have 140 health and wellness centres and 4 modern public health labs across Chennai city. This was according to Mr. Gagandeep Singh, GCC commissioner. He hinted that all the UPHC would be restored at a cost of Rs 5 crores. He concluded that awareness would be created among the public regarding various facilities available at UPHCs and UCHCs. To comply with National Quality Assessment Standards, efforts are being taken now and quality of services would be monitored.

It is known that GCC has a well established health infrastructure, providing comprehensive services like antenatal and postnatal care, child health care, basic diagnostics and treatment for both communicable as well as non-communicable diseases.
