The sensational piece of news is that Tambaram Corporation has privatised solid waste management in all its 5 zones and 70 wards. The main aim was to make Tambaram Corporation a zero waste urban local body. This attempt is being spoken in high esteem by many now.
New waste management agency:
It is noteworthy that the new waste management agency Ourland began its work on 1st of September with 1650 workers on a 3 year contract period. There has been a huge improvement in the garbage collection and source segregation from one day to 2 days now per week. The experts and long time residents want more works to be carried out in Tambaram Corporation. This was to ensure that the system works well in a sustained way. For this, daily door to door collection plus GPS devices in garbage collection vehicles and biometric attendance of the workers would be required.
It must be recalled that before Tambaram became a Corporation every day door to door collection was carried out here by the municipality workers. It was brought out by a city health officer from Tambaram Corporation that this is the first time a single agency has been hired to collect and transport garbage. By this, there would be uniformity in the solid waste management.
Activities that would be done by Ourland:
The door to door collection of garbage would be carried out by Ourland, use large vehicles to transport garbage from waste transfer stations and sweep public areas.
