The long delayed St Thomas Mount- Velachery MRTS line would be completed by the end of 2022. This was mentioned by the SR or southern railways officials.
This news would certainly bring huge delight and relief on the face of many residents belonging to southern Chennai localities like Adambakkam, Madipakkam, Vaanuvampet and Nanganallur etc.
It is noteworthy that the 5km MRTS extension project has 3 new stations like Puzhuthivakkam, Adambakkm and St Thomas Mount. The reason for the long delay was mainly because of legal issues over 431 sq m of land for the phase-2 extension project. An official from SR spoke about how the issue has been resolved now and the acquisition of 50m land would be finished soon
The change in the design due to land acquisition issues has resulted in an increase in the estimated cost from Rs 495.74 crores to Rs 734.01 crores now. The superb piece of information is that once when the St Thomas Mount- Velachery MRTS gets over then the residents living in south Chennai places would be able to have easy access to Beach, Mylapore, Koyambedu, Airport etc by intermodal transport.
It must be taken into account that St Thomas Mount station would be integrated with suburban, metro and bus stops etc. The stations at Puzhuthivakkam and Adambakkam would be stand alone stations. Truth is that the commercial development of a station would depend on factors like patronage and interest of the private partner etc. There are many traffic diversions due to construction work and the nearby residents want respite from these traffic diversions.
It was later pointed out by a local resident belonging to Adambakkam that in several stretches along the Jawaharlal Nehru Road vehicles were forced to take a roundabout of atleast 1km distance. This was due to the road crossings being barricaded.
