New storm water drains or SWD would be constructed in several places belonging to 2 GCC zones like Perungudi and Sholinganallur. It is now said that the German Development Bank KfW has given permission to GCC to carry out SWD works in these zones.
Under the Integrated Storm Water Drain project in Kovalam Basin, GCC would be able to float tenders for 9 packages at an estimated cost of Rs 447.03 crores.
The residents living on Bhuvaneswari nagar, Radha Nagar, Balaji Nagar, MCN Nagar, Ananda Nagar, Kannagi Nagar, River View Colony, Semmenchery and Tsunami Colony etc would get benefited by the SWD works.
It must be taken into note that GCC has already issued work orders for 3 packages of Rs 150.45 crores for constructing drains at 139 streets at Srinivasa Nagar, Sadasivam Nagar, Nanganallur, Madipakkam, Ram Nagar and Nehru Colony etc. Point is that the existing SWD at 95 streets would be restored.
Original DPR has been modified by GCC due to the litigation from the residents with the National Green Tribunal. Kovalam Basin has been segregated into M1, M2 and M3 components. Under the M1 component, zones like Perungudi and Sholinganallur fall is known.
Kovalam Basin covers most of the coastal areas in south Chennai. In March 2020 GCC entered into an agreement with KfW for funding of Rs 1714 crores for building SWD in Kovalam Basin. Information is that the funding agency prepared DPR for the SWD project. It is learnt that a team from KfW visited Chennai and took part in discussions with some officers belonging to GCC
