For the last 2 years, organ transplants have not been carried out due to Coronavirus pandemic infection. Things have changed now.
In the Government Omandurar Multi Speciality Hospital in Chennai, a heart transplant was done on a 30 year old man with cardiac ailment.
It must not be forgotten that last week a 19 year old youth was declared brain dead and his vital organs were harvested after getting approval from his parents. This was as per the health minister Mr. M. Subramanian.
He spoke about how last month deans, surgeons, transplant coordinators, senior doctors etc from the district headquarters hospitals met and discussed organ transplantation. Now, the state of Tamil Nadu has resumed organ transplantation.
He then threw light on how last week a heart from Vellore was brought to Chennai in just 93 minutes and heart transplant was carried out in Apollo hospitals successfully.
This heart transplantation was made possible by the huge efforts taken by the hospitals, doctors etc along with the police department. As many as 110 instructions have been issued to the health department and of those 36 pertained to the medical colleges.
It is worthy to note that these instructions were regarding the needs of the public seeking medical treatment for a range of issues.
