Poor illumination of streets in Chennai that has been creating many issues for women would soon become a thing of the past!!
Under the Nirbhaya Fund, as many as 38 neighbourhoods in Chennai having the issue of poor illumination of streets would get better lighting facilities soon. This would be done to promote women’s safety. Those streets that have reported crime against women in 38 neighbourhoods in Chennai have been identified by GCC.
These streets would have more than 5900 LED lights and 85 high mast lamps installed. It is learnt that the GCC has taken steps to reduce the number of street lights that have malfunctioned in the neighbourhoods in Chennai. Less than 1% of street lights have malfunctioned in most of the 15 GCC zones in Chennai.
The GCC has received complaints regarding the malfunctioning of about 1.4lakhs street lights in the last 6 months. In just under 24 hours, 1.37lakhs street lights were rectified. In north Chennai, Tiruvottiyur zone reported a higher percentage of malfunctioning of the street lights. When there has been delay in rectification of street lights then penalty has been imposed on the agencies,
Soon, important places like Anna Salai and PH Road etc would get additional street lights for the sake of women’s safety. Point to be noted is that along the PH. Roads near Chennai Metro Rail head office with dark spots have been identified by GCC and these spots would soon be illuminated. This place would have atleast 118 LED street lights to prevent crimes against women. Not only better lighting, camera surveillance would also be improved in the areas in Chennai.
Near May Day Park in Chintadripet in Chennai, 8 high mast lamps would be installed to safeguard women. Manjambakkam Junction would also get 4 high mast lamps. There would be additional lighting in the GST Road near Meenambakkam too.
