On Wednesday night, heavy rains hit Chennai and its suburbs, disrupting at least 35 flight services at the city airport. The rain, which began in the evening, intensified by 9 PM with thunder and lightning, significantly impacting flight operations and stranding numerous passengers.

An Indigo Airlines flight from Trichy, carrying 68 passengers, had to return to Bengaluru due to the severe weather. Over a dozen flights from cities like Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, and Bhubaneswar were forced to circle the airport for extended periods, unable to land.

Additionally, 20 flights headed to destinations including Kochi, Coimbatore, Hyderabad, Delhi, and international locations like Singapore and Abu Dhabi faced delays of up to two hours. Two Sri Lankan Airlines flights scheduled to return to Sri Lanka were also canceled.

Although some aircraft managed to land after the rains eased, an Indigo flight arriving from Tiruchirappalli at 10:05 PM was diverted to Bengaluru due to insufficient fuel after circling for too long. In total, Wednesday`s weather resulted in three incoming flight delays, 20 outgoing flight delays, and two cancellations.
