The peaks of Chennai weather

Posted on: 03/Jan/2019 7:47:49 PM
Chennai is experiencing winter. Though it is not freezing, to bear with 19.7°C doesn’t seem to be too pleasant. For a few more days, the balmy weather is likely to continue until there is a shift in wind direction that will induce heat.

When skies are cloudless, there is going to be no way to trap heat. Areas a little away from sea are experiencing colder weather.

  • Ennore which is close to sea has seen 18.1 degrees C on Tuesday night
  • On Wednesday, there was 20.7°C temperature in Kattupakkam
  • At 27 km from Marina Beach, the temperature recorded at 15.5°C right on the first  day of January and it was 16.3°C on 2nd January
  • In Poonamallee, the temperature recorded was 16.5 °C on  1st January and 17.5 °C on 2nd January
  • In the northern suburb at Madhavaram, the temperature recorded was 16.0°C on Tuesday and 17.3°C on Wednesday
  • In Vellore and a few other northern districts, when set against Chennai, there is about 4-5 degree dip in temperature. They recorded to be 13.1°C on the night of Tuesday and on Wednesday, it was  12.7°C
  • In Nungambakkam, on 1st January, it was 19.7°C.
  • In Meenambakkam, the temperature came down to 17.8°C

It was back on 5th January 2010 that Chennai saw such low temperature. And on 17th January 2012, the temperature was recorded to be 17.7°C. on 29th January 1905, Chennai had its coldest night at 13.9°C.

The minimum temperature was recorded to be 20.2 °C when recorded in Nungambakkam on Wednesday and in Meenambakkam, it was 19.3°. Being the start of winter, it is common to observe drop in temperature in January, says S. Balachandran, the deputy director of IMD.
