Jallikattu at Madurai Palamedu began today morning. Palamedu which is 25 kms away from Madurai is known for Jallikattu. Many of the bulls from southern districts participate in this Jallikattu on the occasion of Pongal.
Since the Jallikattu is taking place after 2 years, people have flooded to Palamedu. Because of this, the security has been beefed up. 2000 policemen have been deployed for security. 850 bulls and 1607 bull tamers will participate in this Jallikattu. Medical checkup was done for the bulls as well as the bull tamers early in the morning.
Bull tamers took oath in the presence of Madurai Collector K. Veera Raghava Rao. After offering Pongal to Manjal Malai Swamy, the bulls are being released through the vaadivaasal (entry point),
Madurai Collector K. Veera Raghava Rao waived the flag and started the Jallikattu. The winners will be given prizes such as cycle, bikes and mopeds.
