From today (Thursday, 1st February), it is mandatory to carry the E-way Bill for transportation of goods, which is a receipt generated through the internet, in 10 states in the country including Tamil Nadu.

After the implementation of the GST system in the country, for free trade flow, the checking gates located in the borders of the states were removed. Instead, the system of the goods transporter carrying the details of the goods by way of  E-way bill, a receipt generated through the internet, is being implemented from today.

Wherever goods are transported from one state to another, the E-way bill is mandatory. However, the system of the E-way bill for goods transportation within the state is coming into effect in 10 states including Tamil Nadu from today. For some states like Punjab, Maharashtra, and a few others, the appeal from the traders seeking additional time to understand and implement the new procedure was accepted and the time extension has been given.

Though there have been objections from a few traders in Tamil Nadu, most traders have shown interest in using the E-way bill system. The Commercial Tax Department officials informed that 75000 traders have registered for the E-way bill system.

The goods transporters will have to make advance registration in the websites www.ewaybill.nic.in  OR www.ewaybillgst.gov.in to facilitate downloading the E-way bill. For the vehicles carrying goods over a distance of 10 km within the location, E-way bill is mandatory.
