The construction of a bypass road around Kelambakkam on Rajiv Gandhi Salai is expected to be completed by January end. The project faced delays due to land acquisition issues involving the Salt Department, but these have now been resolved.
A 1.6 km stretch of the bypass had remained incomplete, but work has resumed. The remaining stretch is being built on a 600-meter section, where soil quality issues were addressed by removing unsuitable soil to a depth of 1.5 meters. The new soil being used for the construction meets the required California Bearing Ratio (CBR) of 7–8 for stability.
The 4.65 km long, six-lane bypass, which began construction in 2018, is designed to connect Padur to Thaiyur and alleviate traffic congestion on the heavily used Phase 2 of Rajiv Gandhi Salai.
Officials have stressed the need for the timely completion of the bypass, especially with increasing traffic due to growing residential and IT developments in the area. They also called for regular maintenance of the existing road, removal of encroachments, and addressing the cattle menace to ensure smoother traffic and safety for pedestrians.
