Is the solid waste management or SWM in Chennai effective?

The GCC or Greater Chennai Corporation has been carrying out an important basic work that is keeping the city clean through solid waste management or SWM. Despite concentrating too much on solid waste management, the problem regarding garbage and debris dumping is still present in Chennai. Surprised right!!

Now, the residents belonging to Mylapore Bazar Road Third lane near Bazaar Road market have complained about the dumping of debris and garbage on a vacant area in the locality. The residents are unhappy regarding the lethargic nature of GCC in clearing the waste.  It was later pointed out by a resident and social activist that the debris and garbage remain scattered for nearly 2 months. Point is that all the vehicles like school vans and buses etc pass through the street due to metro rail works and traffic on Kutchery Road.

Many complaints were lodged regarding this but till now no action has been taken by the GCC officials. Various other wastes that have been dumped by the residents here are motor vehicles, kitchen appliances etc. It must be noted that during monsoon season the situation becomes worse as rain water gets mixed with waste and it becomes breeding ground for mosquitoes.

The social activist then spoke about how there have been few issues between GCC and contractors. Bitter fact is that the common people would get affected due to the strike by the contractors. He wanted the GCC to take action to clear the waste that has been dumped. It is true that debris and garbage are being dumped in many other localities also in Chennai. This is because the GCC has not been collecting the waste daily from the residents.
