Chennai’s public transportation system should undergo a patch up and renovation completely, in order to rectify the traffic chaos across the city.

Last week, the managing director of Metropolitan Transport Corporation (MTC) P. P. Rajendran gave his speech in the seminar arranged by the Japanese consulate.

On the occasion, he said that about 80 to 160 lakh people will be using the public transport on the daily basis. But only 61 lakh people will be obtaining the facility.

Public transport includes MTC buses, electric trains and the MRTS. As the efficiency of the MTC buses are higher, major portion of 50 lakhs people will be carried by the 3,531 MTC buses; 10 lakhs people have been travelling in electric trains and 1 lakh people travels in MRTS. The proportion split of people who walk to travel had mounted in the about four decades.

There prevails a lot of confronts hidden behind the promotion of the incorporated transport networks. We need to convene with the vast fissure in demand and supply of the transport infrastructure, dealing with the ample funds and swinging from private mode to public, he added.

He highlighted that, the short of synchronization and existences of manifold interventions were few aspects that need to be conquered, to solve the problem.
