Chennaiites water need, to some extend has been solved by Poondi, Puzal, Sozhavaram, Sembarapakam, Veeranam lakes.
Moreover, about
100 million litres of water has been supplied from Minjur desalination plant to
North-Chennai zones and from Nemmeli desalination plant to South-Chennai
regions respectively.
In Chennai, due to
impact of peak summer, levels of water in lakes have been reducing step by
step. As on 28 January, 2.009 million litres capacity Puzal Lake now has only
1,792 million litres of water. Similarly 96 million litres capacity Sozhavaram
lake has now descent to only 11 million litres of water.
With the help of
the giant motors through penstock, water will be getting transferred from
Sozhavaram Lake to the Puzal Lake.
In order to safeguard Chennai people from the
risk of water scarcity in this summer, TamilNadu Public service department
officers has discussed with the Andra state Public service department to open
up and bring water from the kandaleru dam.
Accordingly, on 26
March, evening Krishna river water has been opened in Andra State and water has
been transferred at a speed of 1000 million litres per minute. On 31 March, it
reached TamilNadu border Zero point, Thamarikupam, Oothukotai. By 1 April, it
reached the Poondi Lake.
Chennaiites will receive nearly 3,600 times water supply via Chennai Drinking water board Lorries.
