Mr. Mannar Jawahar, a former vice-chancellor of Anna University, has advised the students to check on different aspects such as the faculty of the college, its infrastructure, and the job opportunities while selecting the college to join.
There is a lot of variety of the subjects to be chosen while joining a degree course. Arts, Science, Engineering, Medical courses, and veterinary course are some of them.
Most of the +2 students prefer to join engineering courses. There are 570 engineering colleges in Tamil Nadu. There are more than 300000 seats available. Hence, it is somewhat easy to get admission. However, the important point is getting admission in the best colleges.
The students preferring to join engineering courses will have to look at 3 important aspects. These are the faculty, the infrastructure, and the job opportunities.
Faculty - The faculty should be suitably educated in their chosen subjects of speciality & teaching. Another point to check is the teacher-student relationship.
Infrastructure - Facilities such as library, laboratories, class rooms, and computer set-up are some of the aspects falling in the infrastructure. The availability of these facilities must be checked.
Job opportunities & Campus interviews - It is advisable to know about how many & which companies come to the college for conducting campus interviews & tests.
Faculty employed by the universities and their affiliated colleges are paid suitable salaries. Hence, it can be expected that they will perform with dedication. The infrastructure also would be more complete.
However, when considering the private & self-financed engineering college, it is rather difficult to check & confirm these 3 important aspects. So, it is better to check about these aspects by referring to the old students or friends of the respective colleges and then only decide whether to join.
Select the branch of your first preference à There are several branches in engineering courses such as civil, mechanical, electrical, electronics, bio-technology, etc.. Students must select the branch of their first preference. Also, parents must refrain from giving too much advice & counselling to the +2 passed students. It is better for the parents to allow the student select his preference.
The first year is rather tough à About 68% of the students who join engineering courses are from rural areas. They would be highly interested in studies. However, the fact that they studied in Tamil Medium at school would weigh more on their minds leading to some inferiority complex. This may lead to a poor academic perfoformance as well!
These students should give up this approach completely. Generally, the first year is a little more tough for the students who are just out of their schools. However, the further years would become gradually easier. So, it is better for the students to avoid unnecessary tensions & fears.
