Counting centers in the city will be ‘caged’ to prevent untoward incidents during the counting of votes, for the Lok Sabha elections 2014, on Friday. In previous elections, unidentified persons have damaged video cameras and facilities at a counting hall in the city. Counting in some constituencies is likely to be quite challenging because of the large number of candidates in the fray.

During the last elections, poll personnel had to leave the counting centre at Loyola College in a hurry, before completion of counting, due to instances of violence. This time, the number of authorized persons at the counting centre at College of Engineering, Guindy (CEG), will be high as there were as many as 42 candidates in the Chennai South Lok Sabha constituency. Special arrangements for counting have been put in place in some segments such as Kolathur and Royapuram too.

The number of rounds in each segment has been finalised. Tiruvottiyur segment will have 19 rounds of counting. Perambur, Virugambakkam and Velachery will have 18 rounds of counting. Saidapet will have 17 rounds.Dr. Radhakrishnan Nagar, Kolathur, Villivakkam, Anna Nagar, Mylapore and Sholinganallur will have 16 rounds. Thiru-Vi-Ka Nagar and Thousand Lights will have 15 rounds. Chepauk and T. Nagar will have 14 rounds. Royapuram will have 13 rounds, and Egmore and Harbour will have 12 each.

Counting is likely to be delayed as printed data on each round will be given to all candidates only after authorisation by the returning officer and observer.Security arrangements are in place at Queen Mary’s College, CEG, Anna University and Loyola College to facilitate counting of votes.
