Any increase in train fares? Interview with new railway Minister Ms. Sadanand Gowda

The newly sworn-in Central Railway Minister, Mr. Sadanand Gowda responded to a query about any increase in train fares.

Assumption of office

A 46-member Cabinet under the Prime Minister, Mr. Narendra Modi assumed office yesterday. The details of portfolios for all ministers were released officially yesterday. After that, the ministers assumed offices as per the portfolio.

The ministers had an official meeting with their officers.

Arun Jaitley (defence)

Procurements of defence equipment is taking a lot of time. This will be expedited. There should be absolutely no controversies in procurement. Modi government will allot top priority to expedite this procurement.

Ravi Shankar Prasad (Law)

A special national judiciary appointment council will be formed. Special squads will be made on top priority for investigations on black money. A close study will be made on the Lok Pal system. Also, legalisation of homo-sexual relations by the Supreme Court will be scrutinised.

Sadanand Gowda (Railways)

A meeting with other ministers will be organised on top priority regarding the issue of train fares. Then, a meeting with the railway department officials will be conducted. Finally, a meeting will be had with the Prime Minister. A decision will be taken only after these meetings. 2 weeks’ time will be required to study and analyse various aspects.

Ram Vilas Paswan (Food)

Priority will be given to the control of the prices of food items, improvement of the existing public distribution system, and better storage systems of grains preventing decay. Discussions on these issues with the department officials will be conducted next week. Efforts will be taken to ensure minimum guarantee price for agricultural products.

Najma Heptullah (Backward Community Welfare)

Reservation is not the right solution for the development of Muslims. It is only an escape. Solutions have to make in conjunction with the Constitution. Our constitution does not permit reservations on religion basis. Special consideration has to be given for the educational development of backward communities. The new government will ensure the development of communities of all religions.

Santhosh Kumar Gangwar (Textile)

Efforts will be taken to popularise Indian clothes in foreign countries and to increase textile exports.

Harsimrat Kaur Badal (Deputy minister, food conditioning)

Efforts will be made to reduce the losses made post-harvest.
