So as to meet the drinking water needs in Chennai, water has been brought from Punti, Hills, Chembarambakkam, Cholavaram, Veeranam lakes and distributed to people.

In addition to it, through the sea water desalination process, drinking water was been supplied to people from Nemmeli, Kattuppakkam area.

Due to lack of rainfall, there has been no water flow from Punti, Hills, Chembarambakkam, Cholavaram, Veeranam lakes.

Krishna water, which has been carried out from Andra state to Punti Lake has been temporarily stopped from 2 May. Hence day by day, the water level has been kept on decreasing in the lakes.

The presence of water level status: 366 million cubic feet in Punti Lake, 1461 million cubic feet in Puzal Lake, 1232 million cubic feet in Chembarambakkam Lake, 2 million cubic feet in Cholavaram Lake, 1100 million cubic feet in Veeranam Lake.

From Veeranam Lake, nearly 180 million litre water has been served to Chennai on the daily basis. Various other sources of water includes 130 million litre from Puzal Lake, 90 million litre of water from Chembarambakkam and Tamaraipakkam and Punti Lake and 200 million litre from sea water desalination plants.

On the whole, in and around Chennai zones will be receiving for a minimum of 831 million litre of drinking water on the daily basis from these resources. But now-a-days this marginal level has been descending to 600 million litres of water.

That’s when it rains, water fills in lakes, until then water shortage will remains the same.
