Ammanur village in Tamil Nadu - the 1st digitalized village in the state

Ammanur, a village located in the district of Kanchipuram, has become the 1st digital village of the state of Tamil Nadu with over 1000 residents availing the Wi-Fi facility in the village.

The free Wi-Fi facility was arranged with the efforts of BSNL and using the development funds allotted for the parliament constituency.

The farmers in the village avail the Wi-Fi facility to access various details including the prices of seeds, fertilizers, etc., electricity charges, weather conditions and forecast, and agriculture-related information, and about the latest technologies adopted in the agriculture field.

With this trend established, the farmers of Ammanur village have become trend-setters for other farmers.
BSNL has joined with a private enterprise to provide the free Wi-Fi facility in this village.

The Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) of this constituency, R. S. Bharathy, allotted Rs. 10 Lakhs for this project from the constituency development funds.
Chennai BSNL Chief General Manager S. M. Kalavathy came forward to arrange for the laying of fiber-optic cable required for the Wi-Fi facility.

Subsequently, Wi-Fi facility was arranged in Ammanur village on 10th October. This facility can be used around 3 km distance around the village as the private company has installed latest equipment in 4 different locations in the village.

Everyone having a smartphone enjoys the facility. The arrangement provides the facility for a maximum of 200 persons to avail the facility at the same time.

Up to 400 MB data can be downloaded every day.
The facility is available for Ammanu village residents throughout the 24 hours in a day.

The persons visiting Ammanur can switch on the Wi-Fi facility in their cell phone, Then, they have to get the OTP (One Time Password) through their cell. Wi-Fi facility will be immediately available.

There are 3000 residents in Ammanur village. They can enjoy the free Wi-Fi facility throughout the year. When the facility commenced, only 350 persons availed it in the initial stages. However, by end October, more than 100 persons have started availing the free Wi-Fi.

Now, there is a high-awareness about this among the village residents that there are prospects when everyone will avail it.

Presently, the facility is used for various purposes such as paying electricity bills, booking for rain/bus tickets, negotiating and fixing the prices of agricultural items, access to agriculture-related info and technology, and weather forecast.

BSNL officials observed that the villagers also access info regarding education, daily events on various fronts, etc.
