Infectious disease cholera has come back once again in the Chennai city has sent huge shock waves. It must be noted that in the last two years the Chennai city did not have even a single cholera case but now two patients in Nandanam in Chennai were tested positive for this infectious disease and three persons have showed symptoms of this disease.
It is now revealed that the doctors belonging to Apollo Speciality Hospital have red flagged Greater Chennai Corporation regarding the cholera cases. To prevent this infectious disease from spreading to others the affected patients were shifted to an isolation ward.
According to an infectious diseases expert Dr Abdul Ghafur the food brought from outside could be the cause for this cholera in these patients.
The condition of these cholera affected patients is stable now and these patients were admitted in this hospital for various diseases like cancer etc. This was later confirmed by a doctor.
On Monday 26th March the laboratory in this hospital confirmed cholera and since then as many as 50 samples of water and food from within the hospital were tested and they did not have any contamination. The ‘Emergency codes’ to prevent spreading of this cholera has been initiated by the hospital. Foods brought from outside must not be consumed by the patients now. The doctors plus nurses and paramedics have been alerted regarding the cholera cases. There is now strict monitoring of hand wash and hygiene in this hospital.
One important piece of information is the patients who show symptoms of this cholera such as vomiting, diarrhoea, dehydration were tested and have been given treatment symptomatically.
According to Dr N.A. Senthilnathan corporation health officer, the civic body was informed about five patients admitted to the hospital for more than a month infected with cholera.
These patients had severe diarrhoea and they tested positive to cholera. Food safety department would also be informed regarding this issue. Food plus water samples would be tested both inside as well as outside the hospital. A probe had started and this was confirmed by none other than food safety commissioner P. Amudha.
