Grand Panguni Uthiram festival today (30th March)

Large numbers of devotees have started gathering in the Tamil Nadu southern districts on the occasion of the grand Panguni Uthiram festival to be celebrated today – Friday, 30th March.

The last month of the Tamil calendar months is called Panguni. The day on which the 12th of the 27 stars, Uthiram falls in the month of Panguni, is called Panguni Uthiram. In this year 2018, the grand occasion of Panguni Uthiram falls on 30th March, Friday, today.

The prayers o the deity of Lord Sastha on the occasion of the Panguni Uthiram is considered to be very sacred,

The groups of societies who could not trace their ancestral God consider that Lord Sorimuthu Ayyanar of Kariayaru, located at the feet of the Western Ghat range of hills, as their ancestral deity and visit and offer prayers.

Further, a large number of groups of devotees who consider Sastha as their ancestral God, visit the various temples of Sastha – Seevalapperi Marukalthalai Sastha, Pirancheri Karaiyadi Madaswmai Sastha, Padakalinga Sastha, Sengodi Sastha, and more than other 300 Sastha temples and offer their prayer on the holy occasion of Panguni Uthiram.

Even the group of workers belonging to this area who have migrated to other places for their jobs make it a regular annual visit to offer their prayers to their ancestral God, Sastha, on the Pangunu Uthiram Day.

The tradition of offering worship to the ancestral God facilitates the people to live their lives properly and also unites them. It is also an occasion for them to meet their relatives.

There is also a tradition to offer flowers to the ancestral God to decide on the important familial functions such as weddings and also to offer the wedding invitation to the Lord before distribution to the near and dear.

Thus,  large numbers of groups of devotees have gathered in the southern districts of Tamil Nadu from different places to offer prayers on the holy occasion of Panguni Uthiram.
