Recently there was hike in the bus tickets in the state of Tamil Nadu and it was followed by many protests from people in many places. Many special bus services are being operated now with increase bus fares is known.

The latest news is the state transport department has sent a circular regarding the operation of these special buses. It is now revealed that that the transport corporations must not operate these special buses unnecessarily. Actions would be taken on those who violate the norms.

Over servicing is the major issue now as these special service buses transport less number of passengers. As a result of over servicing the earnings have suffered a lot. This was confirmed by the department in a letter sent to the managing directors of all the corporations. It is worthy to note that ordinary bus services were converted into special bus services by the corporations. This had created huge problems for the public as they were forced to pay huge amount for their tickets. It is brought out that provision allowing surge pricing of bus tickets during the weekends, festivals by introducing special bus services never existed in the past.

This move was done only to increase the revenue of the transport corporations. One important piece of information is the corporations misused this provision and operated special buses even during the week days.

It is now said that unless the estimated earnings per kilometre or EPKM is more than Rs 30, the Tamil Nadu State Transport Undertakings chairman’s office ordered all the corporations not to operate these special bus services. If operation of special bus services is continued then strict action would be taken for violation.

During this extended weekend, passengers at the popular CMBT in Koyambedu, Chennai complained that many bus services that are going to places such as Coimbatore, Madurai etc were operated in the name of special services.
