Corporation of Chennai and Brussels sign agreement over sharing of technical knowledge

To promote the exchange of technical knowledge between the cities of Chennai and Brussels, GCC or Greater Chennai Corporation has signed a general partnership agreement on Wednesday, 18th April 2018. This is now spoken in high esteem by many.

It must be noted that issues regarding urban development would be given major importance in this agreement. In the secretariat, Mr. S.P. Velumani who is the minister for municipal administration and water supply signed an agreement on behalf of Chennai Corporation. On behalf of kingdom of Belgium, state secretary for development co-operation of the Brussels Capital Region, Bianca Debaets signed the agreement. This agreement is for a time period of 5 years and could be renewed on mutual consent.

According to a senior official belonging to corporation of Chennai it is a friendly agreement and not a sister city agreement that was done in the month of July in the year 2016 with Ulsan, South Korea.

Official also spoke about how Belgium for the first time ever had selected a city instead of national capital. It is now revealed by representatives of Brussels Capital Region that they had selected the city of Chennai because of the resilience shown by Chennai in face of floods etc.

This agreement comes at a time when City of Chennai is pushing towards smart city project and corporation officials spoke about how exchange of knowledge between Chennai and Brussels would be superb.

The official belonging to corporation later spoke about how the agreement is purely on generic terms. The Belgian delegation is on preliminary study regarding solid waste, pollution etc is known.

It is now said that under this agreement the corporation schools would get expertise assistance in the education field.

Other important persons who made their presence felt in the above meeting were Ambassador of Kingdom of Belgium to India, Jan Lyukx, Consul-General of Kingdom of Belgium in south India, Mark Van De Vreken etc.
