A pond present in Mugalivakkam in Chennai is now making hot news.

People in Mugalivakkam are now surprised to see a compound wall being constructed around this pond. This work is done by GCC or Greater Chennai Corporation and an amount of Rs 19 lakh would be spent for this work. The main purpose of building compound wall is to preserve the remaining portions of this pond. Just 2 weeks ago the construction of compound wall began and waste and debris dumped in this pond is removed for the last 6 to 7 months.

It is now revealed that the residents here are very happy regarding the compound wall as long pending woes regarding encroachments of pond would come to close now.

According to Mr. Siva who is an officer of 156th ward of Alandur division, this Mugalivakkam pond could hold as many as 20000 litres of water. This is enough to meet the water requirements of the residents here. He also spoke about how ground level water of the locale would be increased and how the pond does not have any water bodies associated with it.

For the sake of rejuvenation of this lake, Rs 50 lakhs were ear marked and that was in the year 2013. For the building of temple and bus stand the funds were utilized and construction of compound wall around the lake was delayed.

An official belonging to the corporation of Chennai shared his views and said there were many complaints from the residents here regarding the attempts to encroach the pond. Hence compound wall is being built now.

On the 19th of February 2018, the work order for this project was given and the work is stipulated to be completed before the onset of monsoons in 2 months of time period. Mr. Malarvannan who is a local contractor is in-charge of the contact.

The pond was initially spread over 2 acres but with temple, water tank and bus stand coming up the area is just 50 cents. It is now said that if the pond was conserved properly by GCC then the area would not be affected by the floods in the year 2015.
