Associate doctors being misrepresented as professors would not be there anymore in the state of Tamil Nadu.
The news that has come out now is as per the Medical Council of India rules and nomenclature atleast 7000 doctors in state run medical colleges would be promoted or re-designated by the end of month of May in 2018.
The above was confirmed by the director of medical education Dr. Edwin Joe on Monday 7th May 2018.
During MCI inspections for the renewal of permission, the health secretary Mr. Radhakrishnan and Mr Edwin Joe were informed by the Tamil Nadu Government Doctors Association that associate professors would not pose as professors.
Associate doctors misrepresented as professors has been going on for 5 years and this is to renew permission for continuing MBBS courses in many colleges in spite of 50 % vacancies in professor posts. It is worthy to note that more than 500 of 1020 professor’s posts are vacant.
It is now revealed that fraud would not take place again even if it means that state medical colleges lose recognition. This has been confirmed by the team of doctors.
Medical education director Dr. Edwin Joe expressed his thoughts and said for nearly a month this work on re-designating teaching faculty is going on. He further highlighted that how even at the entry levels there were many variations in designations.
He also spoke about how few MBBS doctors were called as tutors while others were called as demonstrators. Some senior level associate professors are also known as readers.
He later threw light on how promotions were also time bound. Tutors or demonstrators after a period of one year were re-designated as doctors and 3 years later were made assistant professors if in non-clinical stream or senior residents if in clinical stream. It is now clear that doctors having post graduate degree can get promotions and this is as per MCI.
Finally Dr Edwin Joe revealed that the process of promotions was stopped 5 years back and anomalies were found in many promotions. The revised list has been prepared now and has been sent to health department for getting approval.
