Anna University is highly popular educational institute in Chennai and there are many engineering colleges affiliated to this Anna University.

The news that has come out now is 2.57 lakh students studying in the engineering colleges affiliated to Anna University have flunked their even semester exams. It must be noted that totally there are 5.66 lakh students studying in many engineering colleges affiliated to this prestigious Anna University. It is known that the four year engineering course is divided into 4 even and 4 odd semesters and they are of 6 months of duration each.

A pass percent of 50 % have been recorded in atleast 274 of the 508 affiliated (non-autonomous) colleges and there are 7 engineering colleges that recorded pass percentage in single digits. This was as per the data circulated to the colleges by the university. It is really shocking and surprising to mention here that in one college present in the Chennai city suburb just one student managed to pass the semester exam. The poor performances of the students studying in the engineering colleges affiliated to Anna University is not new and has been happening since the last 4 years. This is particularly regarding even semester examinations.

Poor performances of the students have been due to three main reasons like lack of qualified faculty, poor lab facilities plus lack of support for the academically weak students from the government. Mr. E. Balagurusamy, former vice-chancellor of Anna University spoke about how money making through admissions is considered the first priority by the college management. He later explained how the college management are not bothered about developing infrastructure for the students.

Mr. Jayaprakash Gandhi who is an educationist expressed his thoughts and said the variations regarding the performance of the students in odd and even semesters are huge. He further highlighted that the presence of cultural and sports events plus symposiums etc in the even semesters provide less time for the students to prepare for the semester examinations. He also spoke about the zone based evaluation that plays an important role in the results.

Mr. Gandhi finally spoke about how students must not be burdened with 6 papers per semester and it must be reduced to 4 papers with more focus on practical aspects.

It is superb to note that the regional centre of Anna University topped the performance chart. Sairam Engineering College, PSG Institute of Technology and Velammal Institute of Technology were fabulous and made it to the top ten list of colleges.
