This is superb piece of news for those who are frequently going in the trains to Gummidipoondi from Chennai. The news is the work that has been going on the 4th line between Korukkupet and Thiruvottriyur would be completed soon. As a result of this the travelling time between Chennai and Gummidipoondi would be reduced.
The traffic would be eased and the trains could be accommodated on the additional tracks soon after the 5 km track between Thiruvottriyur and Korukkupet, which is a part of 4th lane works between Chennai beach and Athipattu, gets completed. According to an official belonging to railways, trains received at Korukkupet could be diverted at Chennai Beach or Chennai Egmore through one section. Trains bound to Basin Bridge could travel smoothly without any issue in another section.
The suburban trains plus passenger trains, express trains and goods trains are common in the Chennai-Athipattu-Gummidipoondi-Gudur section. This section is also one of the busiest in the southern railway. To get green signal in both the directions the trains have to compete with each other and in the year 2011 the track utilization of double lines in the Chennai- Gummidipoondi section exceeded 120. It must be noted that the railways proposed to develop 21.5km third and fourth tracks between Chennai Beach and Athipattu at a cost of amount of Rs 150 crores. Due to land acquisition issue the above said project did not take off.
The railways department took the additional track laying on the Korukkupet- Athipattu section as the works did not take place on the Chennai Beach-Korukkupet stretch. In the month of October in the year 2014, the third line between Korukkupet and Athipattu was open for the traffic. In the year 2016, the fourth line in the Athipattu- Ennore- Thiruvottriyur section was also put to use.
A railway official hinted that the 5km portion between Korukkupet and Thiruvottriyur would be opened in a month of time. Mr. Venkatesan belonging to Rail Passengers Association of Thiruvottriyur spoke about how railways should extend the third and fourth lines till Gummidipoondi. He later spoke about how the railways must develop dedicated double line between Chennai Beach and Gummidipoondi. There are also some changes in the train operations on Thursday, 7th June 2018 to help engineering works for laying additional tracks between Thiruvottiyur and Korukkupet.
