People living in Adyar in Chennai must feel happy and proud now. The news that has emerged now is Gandhi Nagar in Adyar would have the Chennai first ever Future Street and that is fabulous.
The future streets are those that are friendly to cyclists, pedestrians and differently able people and it is now said that Gandhi Nagar might set an example for many other future streets in Chennai.
The sensational piece of news is Adyar neighbourhood has bagged Rs 1.6crores grant from a Germany based NGO so that street design improvement would be carried out. This would be executed by the Chennai city corporation.
Development of 1.2 km interior roads in Gandhi Nagar, Adyar and improving the last mile connectivity with the Kasturba Nagar as well as Kotturpuram MRTS railway stations would be the major objectives of this pilot project.
According to a corporation official, the pedestrian usage of these roads would be increased by 20 percent in the next 2 years. This upcoming project would be completed in a time period of 18 months. It must be noted that Transformative Urban Mobility Initiative or TUMI is an agency that is funded by Germany’s ministry for economic development and co-operation. This proposal to develop future streets in Adyar was one of the 10 proposals selected for the grant by this TUMI. Both special projects department as well as C40 Cities Climate Leadership Group were responsible for preparing the proposal. On Friday, 8th June 2018, the corporation of Chennai revealed the above mentioned proposal. On behalf of the civic body, corporation regional deputy commissioner (North) S. Divyadarshini travelled to Leipzig to receive the grant plus citation.
An official spoke about how the proposal won the grant from TUMI, Germany as it allows replication. Further scaling up the proposal to cover large neighbourhoods in the future is possible. The estimated cost of the project is Rs 2.66 crores and the grant covers as much as 60 % of the estimated cost. GCC funds would be used for the rest of the cost for this project.
Being home to many educational institutions, Gandhi Nagar in Adyar has been chosen for the pilot project. This was later confirmed by Mr. Daniel Robinson of C40 Cities. The presence of 6 schools and 5 colleges plus a school for differently able kids in this area were just enough for Gandhi Nagar to be chosen now. This project would provide very safe walking environment for as many as 14000 students studying in these schools and colleges.
The popular Vandalur zoo gets more visitors but lack of maintenance is worrying now 400 words
Ever since it was opened for the public in the year 1985, Vandalur zoo or Arignar Anna Zoological Park has been attracting many people. This vandalur zoo is situated over a massive area of 602 hectares is known.
These days more people are visiting this amazing zoo with their families and by that the cash inflow has increased hugely. The sad piece of news is the lack of maintenance of this Vandalur zoo.
The butterfly enclosure in this zoo has been attracting many visitors is well known. This has now become a sore to the eyes and there is nothing colourful here. This had disappointed many visitors who bring their kids. This butterfly enclolosure was built at a cost of 6 million in the shape of a caterpillar and is present over an area of 2.5 hectarres. Many people coming here were shocked to see the overheated enclosure with deserted look as the plants present in this enclosure have gone dry and dull.
A senior official belonging to this Vandalur zoo spoke about how the acrylic roof sheet present above might be responsible for the heat and how it could be replaced to improve the conditions. He then hinted that the officials concerned have been informed about the situation. Lack of proper maintenance of otter enclosure is also another cause of concern as the fresh water mammals survive in the non-cleaned algae ridden water.
A veterinarian expressed his thoughts and concern regarding the otter enclosure maintenance and spoke about how poor maintenance would affect the otter’s skin plus their health. A wildlife biologist spoke about how the otters were weaned away from their mother when they were young and he later spoke about how the officials should have ensured circulation of clean water in their enclosure.
A source belonging to the zoo spoke about how there were 2 enclosures available for the otters and how during the cleaning of the primary enclosures the mammals would be shifted to the secondary enclosure. He highlighted that the water leak in the secondary enclosure was not repaired and cleaning was not possible.
It is really sensational that in this year 2018 in the months of April and May the zoo had as many as 4.72 lakh visitors and an amount of Rs 2.89 cores were generated. In the last year 2017, 3.86 lakh people came to this zoo in the same time period and amount of Rs 2.53 crores were generated.
