Till now not many would have known about Thoppur in Madurai. Soon this Thoppur would become popular among the people. The reason for that is AIIMS or All India Institute of Medical Sciences would be established in this place in the 200 acre land. Amount of Rs 1100 crores would be spent on this project. This was announced by none other than chief minister of TN, Mr. E. Palaniswami. This state-of-art institution would have as many as 750 beds, 100 medical seats plus it would have a nursing college with 60 seats. Moreover this upcoming medical institute would also be making its presence felt in many research based works also. Fantastic isn’t it!!

On Wednesday, 20th June 2018, chief minister of TN thanked prime minister of India Mr. Narendra Modi and union minister for health and family welfare Mr. J.P. Nadda for issuing orders for second AIIMS in Thoppur.

For establishing AIIMS, the state of Tamil Nadu has proposed as many as 5 sites in places like Thoppur in Madurai, Sengipatti in Thanjavur, Pudukottai Town, Chengalpattu in Kancheepuram and Perundurai in Erode. The sanction order was handed over to chief minister of TN by state health minister Mr. C. Vijayabaskar at the Secretariat.

Chief Minister of TN, Mr. E. Palaniswami, expressed his happiness regarding this and thanked prime minster and union health minister for selecting Thoppur to set up AIIMS. He also assured that the state government would provide its help to the centre. It must not be forgotten that former (late) chief minister of TN, Dr, J. Jayalalitha previously requested the centre to establish a second AIIMS in TN so that people of TN would get best health services. The new AIIMS would be set up in Madurai and amount of Rs 1500 crores would be spent.

It is now clear that the chief minister of TN has directed Dr. Vijayabaskar and Mr. J. Radhakrishnan who is the principal health secretary, to provide support to central government to help in the commencement of the work.

Mr. Sanjay Roy, director of Pradhan Mantri Swathya Suraksha Yojana spoke about how the state would provide four-lane connectivity from the national highway to the proposed site plus it would also ensure 20 MVA power supply from 2 different feeders.

One day in the future, late former chief minister of TN, Dr. Jayalalitha’s dream to make the state of TN to provide quality medical education, research and high end tertiary level health care for the poor people would certainly come true.
