Most of us would not have forgotten the impact created by the floods in Chennai in the year 2015. On Friday, 29th June 2018, TN state government had sanctioned Rs 100 crores proposal to take up flood mitigation projects under Greater Chennai Corporation limits to lessen the impact of floods in Chennai in NE monsoon season.
Under assembly rule 110, the chief minister of Tamil Nadu, Mr. E. Palaniswamy, made the announcement. The project would cover Adyar plus Cooum, Kosathalaiyar, Kovalam and Arani River basins etc and funds would be got from the state coffers.
To drain flood water without any hassle and to provide areas that are vulnerable to floods with the infrastructure are very important. This was confirmed by the chief minister. Identifying areas that are having the risk of more damage plus to facilitate free flow of water during the rainy season by linking channels to nearby lakes etc would be the objective. Flood control system would be created by deepening various water bodies.
Shutters would soon be installed by the government so that overflowing weirs impact would be lowered. The shutters would be used to manage excess water overflowing from these weirs and a routing mechanism would be making its presence felt. This was later confirmed by Mr. Satyagopal who is the commissioner for the revenue administration.
Cut and cover tunnelling method would be used in the construction of drains across roads. This would address the issue of inundation on the suburban roads. In the year 2015, Chennai and its nearby places had faced a deluge due to very heavy rains and many areas were inundated is well known.
It is worthy to note that there are three agencies that are responsible for the execution of the project. These are PWD, revenue department and the corporation of Chennai. Presently the corporation of Chennai is busy in the process of building missing storm water drain links to reduce the impact of floods due to overflowing canals. Impact of flooding on Chennai would be reduced to a great amount once the mitigation works gets over. This was confirmed by Mr. Satyagopal.
