Stray dog issue has been growing day by day in Chennai. Many people get bitten by these stray dogs every day and they find their lives difficult. Chennai Corporation has been doing many superb things these days for the people and is now making sensational news. To keep a tab on these community dogs and to scientifically bring their numbers down, corporation of Chennai had developed a mobile app to enumerate the number of dogs.
Apart from the above mentioned use the app would also play superb role and provide important information to the corporation officials regarding the area wise concentration of the dogs plus gender, age and reproductive ability etc.
Veterinary officer Mr. Kamal Hussain spoke about how every day more than 40 complaints were received regarding the stray dogs. He later spoke about the ineffectiveness of the animal birth control programme and increase in the stray dogs. This has led to the development of the mobile app to keep a check on these stray dogs.
A senior officer belonging to the department of health spoke about how the officials of health department have successfully completed a pilot project in 3 divisions in Sholinganallur, Teynampet and Royapuram. After getting administrative sanction, the pilot project would be implemented in 3 other zones also plus in Chennai city in another few weeks of time.
According to an official it was revealed that as many as 6 categories like sterilized male, unsterilized male, sterilized female, unsterilized female, lactating mothers and puppies would be present in the mobile app developed to keep a tab on the stray dogs. The official later explained about the colour codes that would be helpful to keep a tab on the population even after 6 months. Puppies and lactating mothers would be sterilized.
Previously the census regarding the stray dogs were done manually by the civic body with the help of NGO and the number of stray dogs present was calculated as 84000. This latest mobile app would show the exact number of stray dogs in each area. Information regarding the sterilization of the dogs would also be known easily and those areas where there are many unsterilized dogs could be given attention. Veterinary officer, Mr. Kama Hussain, later spoke about the accuracy of the app and how the scope of error would not be more than 5 percent.
Seventy percent of the total dog population should be spayed and neutered at any given time and this is as per the World Health Organization.
